Art and text have been interwoven for centuries – from ancient illustrated manuscripts to the ad copy/headline inspired works of Barbara Kruger – in every medium – the only limits are your imagination. For this exhibition, we are featuring artworks that incorporate letters, words, text - or any parts thereof - into the creative process.

As a lover of definitions, we found ‘textural’ captured the essence of this process:

Textural: Having a structure of interwoven elements; having a distinctive physical composition of something, especially with respect to the size, shape, and arrangement of its parts; the quality given to a piece of art, literature, or music by the interrelationship of its elements

Gallery proprietor and altered book artist Elizabeth Ashcroft and internationally renowned artist and writer Agneta Falk juried the show. Agneta is a widely published poet and active member of the Revolutionary Poet Brigade - a group of poets in the San Francisco Bay Area dedicated to bringing positive change in the world through the power of poetry. Her artworks often incorporate the written word and can be found in private collections around the world. Elizabeth has been working out of her North Beach studio since 1996. Before taking the helm at Live Worms Gallery in August, 2020, she operated a small gallery out of her North Beach studio, Grey City Gallery, from 2015-2020. Her altered books are in several national collections, including the Smithsonian American Art and Portrait Gallery Library.
